PROBLEM
Over the years, a concrete slab not protected
by a membrane, or whose membrane has been damaged, is
subject to major de-icing salt infiltration, which corrodes
the reinforcing steel located in the concrete core.
This corrosion induces expansion of the steel until
the concrete fractures in layers (delamination).
Beyond having an appearance of neglect, the concrete
quickly loses its structural capacity, which compromises
the well-being and eventually safety of the users.
INDICATIONS
When the indications become very apparent (spalled concrete
exposing the rusted steel structure - photo
01), the deterioration process is, unfortunately,
well under way. Calcium spots (efflorescence) and the
rust on the concrete (photos 02), indicates
the need to intervene. You can reduce the maintenance
costs of your parking garage by having Tro-Chaînes
examine the structure, as a preventative measure, to
evaluate the extent of corrosion and delamination. A
minor correction at this stage may stop the deterioration
process.
SOLUTIONS
Taking into account the deterioration progress, Tro-Chaînes
presents various solutions ranging from minor repairs
to the complete reconstruction of the slab. All slab
repairs or rebuilding include installation of a waterproofing
membrane that will prevent de-icing salt infiltration,
thereby protecting the surface for many years to come.
